Nasal Congestion and Sinusitis

Nasal congestion and sinusitis are medical symptoms that can develop due to many different factors. Nasal congestion and sinusitis are considered in two main groups as structural disorders in the anatomical structures of the nose and their inflammations.

Deviation of the nasal septum, swelling in the nasal concha and adenoid, which is one of the structural elements in the nose, are the most common causes of anatomical nasal obstruction. Causes of congestion due to inflammatory processes in the nose consist of medical conditions such as colds, flu infections, sinusitis and hay fever.

So what is nasal congestion? The situation where breathing, which is one of the most important tasks of the nose, cannot be fulfilled based on the mentioned factors is called nasal congestion.

What is Sinusitis?

Inflammation of the sinuses (inflammation); It can be of infectious and non-infectious origin. The condition, sinusitis among the people, is now called rhinosinusitis.

What is sinus?

Sinuses are air-filled bone cavities inside the skull bones and their mouths (i.e. channels) open into the nose. Some (ethmoid and maxillary sinuses) are formed after birth, others are formed later (sphenoid and frontal sinuses) and are completed at puberty. In addition to providing the timbre and character of the voice, they help humidify the air passing through the nose and approach body temperature, reduce the head's weight as it is filled with air (sinusitis patients feel a heaviness on their head) and keep the head upright.

How does sinusitis occur?

Sinusitis is called inflammation of the mucosa covering the sinus cavities with factors such as viral, bacterial and fungal. Sinusitis is called acute sinusitis if it lasts less than 2 weeks, subacute sinusitis if it lasts between 2 and 12 weeks, and chronic sinusitis if it lasts longer than 12 weeks.
